Visitation: will begin at 12:00 noon, Monday, April 25, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. to greet visitors.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday morning, April 26, 2011 at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Reverend Michael Omundson of the First Christian Church officiating.
Interment: Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

Walter was surrounded by his family when he passed away Saturday evening at Crystal Heights Care Center at the age of 96 years, 1 month and 8 days.

Walter Linzy Gravitt, son of James Benjamin and Eleanor Katherine Kinnaman Gravitt, was born March 8, 1915 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was a 1936 graduate of Oskaloosa High School. July 17, 1937, he married Lucile Ione Whitlock in Oskaloosa. From 1941 to 1949, Walter and Lucile alternately lived in the Riverside area, California and in Oskaloosa. While in California he worked for the Civil Service and then for Douglas Aircraft and while in Oskaloosa he worked for the Ottumwa Naval Reserve Aviation Base. Following their final return to Oskaloosa in 1948, Walter was employed by General Mills, Rolscreen and then Maytag Manufacturing in Newton. In 1977, Walter retired from Maytag after almost 30 years of service. Walter was a member of the First Christian Church. He enjoyed reading, hiking, fishing and hunting.

His family includes his wife of more than 73 years, Lucile; his daughters: Diana L. Provenzano and Linda Edwards, all of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren: David (Michelle) Edwards, Scott Edwards, Robert (Connie) Edwards, Jr., Shelly Ann Edwards, and Valerie, Vincent and Raymond Provenzano; eleven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, Walter was preceded in death by five brothers: Glen, Harry, Edgar, Alfred also known as “Pete”, and an infant brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
