OES Earth Week Wraps Up With Awards And An Assembly

Students of the Oskaloosa Elementary School spent this past week celebrating Earth Week by helping to clean up the area around the school. Students weeded area’s, picked up trash, swept, refreshed mulch or any other project the teachers could come up with that would help get students involved.

On Thursday, April 21st, the Kindergarten class had a “Litter Critter” with the Oskaloosa Middle School Peer Helpers, while the First and Second Graders had a presentation from some graduate students from the University of Iowa.

On Friday, Third Graders competed in a poster competition. The class with the winning poster for Earth Day will get a box lunch on Friday, April 22, at 11:00 am, provided by Hy-Vee. The winning class was Carol Knoot’s class.

OES Fourth Graders competed in a cigarette trash can decorating competition. The winning class for cigarette butt trash cans got a lunch on Friday, April 22. at 11:00 am provided by Subway. Their decorated cans will make their way around to Oskaloosa’s businesses to encourage a clean community. Pam Chapman’s class took home the prize for the 4th grade.

Finally, the Fifth Graders competed in a Chant/Rhyme on Litter Control, Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Friday April 22nd was contest day.  The class with the winning chant got a Pizza lunch on Friday, April 22. at 11:00 am. Pam Behning’s 5th grade class were the winners and enjoyed some wonderful pizza for their reward.

All week long, there was different theme’s to the days to help the kids celebrate the week:

Monday – Shed some color on the world and wear Tie Die Shirts and Peace Symbols.

Tuesday – Stay classy for the Environment, Peace, and Unity by wearing your Oskaloosa Elementary School Class Color T-shirt.

Wednesday – Unify and Partner Up to save the environment and eliminate bullying by dressing alike. Find a friend and dress the same for the day.

Thursday was RED for Caring and Community Unity – Be a kid of Character and care about keeping our town clean. Wear RED!!

Friday was GREEN for Responsibility and Earth Day – Be a kid of Character and go green. Wear GREEN!!
