Central leads first NCAA regional softball rankings

PELLA—Central College is ranked No. 1 in the first NCAA Division III Midwest Region rankings of the season while the Dutch remain at No. 3 in the NFCA national coaches’ poll.

Central is 29-3 overall and 10-0 in Iowa Conference play after sweeping No. 7-rated Coe College in Pella Wednesday, 3-2 and 5-4. Coe (27-7) is rated No. 2 in the Midwest Region.

Saturday’s foe, Luther College, is ranked No. 3 in the region and No. 11 nationally. The Norse, now in second place in the league standings, took a 26-4 overall mark into Thursday’s doubleheader with the Univ. of Dubuque.

Linfield (Ore.) (38-2) received all eight first-place votes in the NFCA poll to remain at No. 1 ahead of Emory (Ga.).

Central’s Saturday games start at 2 p.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex field. The contests will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) with Trevor Castle and can also be heard via www.kniakrls.com. A video webcast and live stats will be streamed at www.kniakrls.com.
