Howard-Payne outlasts Central tennis teams

DALLAS (TEXAS)—It was another day of tight matches against top-level competition as Howard Payne Univ. (Texas) swept the Central College tennis teams Tuesday. The men fell 6-3 and the women were topped 5-4.
Sophomore Bryn Boswell (Pella) racked up two wins, taking the No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-4, after winning No. 2 doubles, 8-4, with partner Jacob Dreyer (senior, Cedar Falls). Dreyer snagged a No. 5 singles victory, 7-6, 6-0.
“Bryn had another good effort today,” coach Steve Tyler said. “He and Jacob were able to get those close matches, which was big for us.”
Although Tyler would have liked a different outcome, he was pleased with what he saw.
“For playing up a level competition-wise, against a team with more experience playing outside year-round, I thought we did well up and down the lineup.” Tyler said.
Both Sara Dale (senior, Marshalltown) and Emily Swartz (junior, Eldora, South Hardin HS) had two wins on the women’s side, claiming No. 1 (6-0, 6-2) and No. 2 (6-2, 6-0) singles, respectively, before pairing up for a victory at No. 1 doubles, 8-1. Chelsea Johnson (sophomore, Mount Vernon) picked up the fourth win for the Dutch at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
“It was another tight match,” Tyler said. “As a team we were up 4-2 with three matches going on. We just needed to win one of them for the victory, but we didn’t come through.”
The men (3-11 overall, 2-9 spring) and women (0-2 spring) will play Tyler Community College (Texas) in an exhibition match Wednesday. Tyler CC is both the men’s and women’s defending champion of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
“Our players will be seeing the highest caliber of tennis in their college experience,” Tyler said. “It goes a long way to see people that are that accomplished. Nobody in the Iowa Conference will be as good, which gives us a feeling that we should be able to play with everyone in the league, and we can.”
The men return to league play Sat., March 26, hosting Wartburg College at 1 p.m.
