Scots subdue Dutch offensive in baseball loss

CHANDLER (ARIZ.)—Macalester College (Minn.) quieted the Dutch offense Monday, limiting the Central College baseball team to four hits as the Dutch suffered a 9-1 setback in their first spring break loss in Arizona.

The Scots were on the board early, notching a run in the first inning before adding two more in the fifth. Macalester posted a five-run sixth inning and added another tally in the eighth. Central was unable to make a dent in Macalester’s lead, scoring just one run in the eighth inning.

“It wasn’t our day,” coach Adam Stevens said. “We had decent at bats but we were just not as sharp today defensively.”

Senior Elliott Yodh got the win for the Scots, while freshman Ryan Dusil (Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) took the loss on the mound. Dusil recorded five strikeouts.

The loss snaps a five-game win streak for the Dutch (6-2).

“Macalaster (3-2) played well and had a good defense,” Stevens said. “We’ll learn from it and move on.”

Central is off tomorrow but returns to action Wednesday, meeting William Paterson (N.J.) at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern Time). The Pioneers are 1-4-1 going into a matchup Tuesday against Concordia Univ. (Wis.).

“We had a good first half of the week,” Stevens said. “We’ll rest up and regroup to get ready for the second half.”
