2011 IOWA CONFERENCE SOFTBALL PREVIEW

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA . . . Defending NCAA Division III championship finals participant Luther College and perennial NCAA qualifier Central College are the coaches’ co-favorites to win the 2011 Iowa Conference softball crown. Both schools received four first-place votes, two second-place votes, and two third-place votes for 66 points.

Coe College, which finished fourth in the IIAC and was selected for the NCAA Championships last season, received the remaining first-place vote and is third in the poll with 61 points, followed by 2010 IIAC regular season champion Simpson with 52 points.

Conference Schedule: The 2011 Iowa Conference baseball schedule gets underway Saturday, April 2, as eight of nine schools – Cornell has the opening bye – take to the diamond to open their 16-game league slates. Schools will play a doubleheader against each Conference opponent.

Conference Tournament: The 2011 Iowa Conference Softball Tournament will be held May 5-7 and will be hosted by the tournament’s top seed. The top two seeds from the regular season will receive a first round bye and the Tournament schedule will feature four games each on Thursday and Friday and two, possibly three, games on Saturday.

New Face in the Dugout: The only new head coach in the league this year is at Dubuque where Wendi Wipperfurth takes over for Corey Parr after serving as an assistant at Solon (Iowa) High School since 2007 Wipperfurth was two-year captain and a 2005 First Team All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pick while at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
