The Lacey Recreation Promotions and Fund Raising committee hosted a bowling tournament last Friday night at Mahaska Bowl in Oskaloosa
The Lacey Recreation Promotions and Fund Raising committee hosted a bowling tournament last Friday night at Mahaska Bowl in Oskaloosa which raised near $3,000 for the Kentfield Babe Ruth fields. The new ballfield will be established in honor of Oskaloosa resident Charlie Kentfield who dedicated over 65 years to Babe Ruth in the community.
Sixteen bowling teams came out to play on the 16 available lanes from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
A small silent auction with donations from Mahaska Drug, Pepsi, Florida Marlins player Wes Helms, Hy-Vee and Brown’s Shoes earned $923 throughout the event.128 community members bowled and about as many spectators were present.
“The evening was a real blast and it was great to see how generous people are when it comes to projects that benefit the community,” said committee member Amy Shafer. “A fun, well-remembered night”, added Sherry Vavra, Executive Director for MCRF. Another committee member, Mark Stek sated that he had already had people ask if the tournament will be an annual event!
The proceeds go toward the Babe Ruth Fields. Total funds raised for this project to date by the committee is near $20,000.
The project has also received two grants. One from the Mahaska County Community Foundation Grant for $10,000 and a Baseball Tomorrow grant for $58,000.
The next fund raiser in the planning stages for the committee is an adult softball tournament at Lacey (March or April depending on the weather).
