Arthur Mathews
Ottumwa. Arthur Mathews, 55, of Ottumwa, died Monday, February 28, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born on February 23, 1956, at Albia, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Berth Plumb Mathews. Following school he worked as a mechanic for a time. He then went to school to learn to be a semi driver. Upon completing school he drove semi for various companies. He retired from driving in 2001, due to ill health.
His family includes his four children: Lora (& Jon) Cox of Ottumwa, Bradley (& Kelly) Mathews of Oskaloosa, Joseph R. Mathews of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Desiree Mathews of Fayetteville, Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; three brothers: Ron Mathews of Ottumwa, John Mathews and Bill Mathews both of North Carolina; a sister: Sally Brown of Kansas City, Missouri; three half brothers: Bob Mathews of Des Moines, Gene Mathews of Salem, Iowa, and Don Mathews of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Viola Mathews; and a half sister: Sandra Fox.
A memorial service for Art Mathews will be held Thursday, March 3, 2011, at 2 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Tim Hendrix officiating. As was Arthur’s wish his body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. The family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel from 12 noon until service time at 2 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Arthur Mathews Memorial Fund.
