William Penn Snaps Long Losing Streak to Missouri Valley
Oskaloosa–For just the second time in program history, the Statesmen women’s soccer team came out on top against Missouri Valley, winning 1-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Tuesday.
WPU (6-5-2, 3-4-2 Heart), which had not beaten the Vikings (3-6-4, 3-3-3 Heart) since 2017, ended an eight-game losing streak in the head-to-head series.
An early goal was all the hosts would need as Anna Museler (Sr., Dresden, Germany, Engineering) passed to Heidi Gill (Buncrana, Ireland, Exercise Science), who then one-touched the ball to Sian Bah (Sr., London, England, Political Science). The senior tracked it down and then slotted a shot just out of the reach of MVU’s goalkeeper for the 1-0 advantage just 8:02 into the contest.
The navy and gold, who were outshot 15-6, had been snake-bitten late in games over the past couple weeks. Fortunately, on Tuesday, despite permitting nine second-half shots, the squad stood strong. The victory, with its accompanying three points, helps WPU stay in the mix for a spot in the conference tournament.
Museler headed the victors with three shots, while Bah added two.
Emma Billings (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Psychology) stopped six Missouri Valley attempts to lead William Penn to its second shutout of the year.
The Statesmen fought off seven MVU corner kicks as well, while failing to produce one themselves.
“It was a good night for our program,” Head Coach Kaleb Preston said. “The goal early in the match gave us something to fight for, and we defended really hard in the second half to secure all three points.”
