William Penn Swept by Central Methodist

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen Esports team made improvements, but was unable to pick up its first win of the year as it fell 2-0 to Central Methodist in Heart of America Athletic Conference Super Smash Bros Ultimate play Tuesday.

WPU (0-3) was led by the trio of Brady Burge (Fr., Van Horne, Iowa), Brandon Thordarson (Sr., Bloomfield, Iowa), and Jayden Comstock (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa).

Game 1

While Central Methodist’s No. 1 player opened with Kirby as its fighter, Burge went with Corrin. Both players were down to their last of three stocks, but CMU finished off the battle to eliminate Burge.

The Eagles’ top player was then knocked off by Thordarson, but at the cost of two stocks from Thordarson. He then met up with CMU’s No. 2, also played by Corrin. Central Methodist took Thordarson’s final life before Thordarson was able to claim any lives himself.

That put Comstock into action against the No. 2. Comstock, playing as Donkey Kong, drained the CMU fighter down to two lives, but in the process was eliminated, putting William Penn into a 1-0 hole.

Game 2

Thordarson took over the top spot in the second game. As Corrin, he battled against Kirby. This time around, Thorardson takes all three stocks from CMU’s No. 1, while losing twice himself.

Thordarson then lost his final life without taking any stocks from CMU’s No. 2 (Corrin).

Burge then entered the game with Bayonetta, taking on Corrin with both players having all three stocks remaining. Burge managed to take two lives before his elimination.

Comstock, going out as Donkey Kong, tried to finish off the Eagles’ No. 2 and get to their third and final fighter. Unfortunately, he lost all three lives prior to getting the No. 2’s last life, ending the night for William Penn with a 2-0 loss.

“Our team is getting a lot better,” Head Coach Austin Fagen-Scholes said. “We are figuring out the right characters to pick, while our gameplay on chosen characters is improving daily. I look forward to our next match.”
