United We Prepare: A Community Effort to Keep Mahaska County Safe
Mahaska County Emergency Management and United Way of Mahaska County are proud to announce United We Prepare, a new local initiative dedicated to helping our neighbors get ready for emergencies, together.
Emergencies don’t wait, and Mahaska County shouldn’t either. Mahaska County Emergency Management and United Way of Mahaska County are joining forces to launch United We Prepare, a proactive effort to ensure our community is ready for any natural or man‑made disaster.
If an emergency does occur, our community will need volunteers more than ever. That’s why United We Prepare includes plans for a remote volunteer sign‑up and supply center, where residents can quickly get involved and access essential items to help them through a crisis.
We’re also reminding everyone to take simple steps now that make a big difference later:
Keep copies of essential personal documents in a safe place. These may include identification documents (driver’s license, state ID, passport, Social Security card); insurance documents (home, health, auto, life — including policy numbers and contact information); legal documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, custody papers, wills, power of attorney); financial records (bank account information, credit card copies, loan documents, retirement account details); housing documents (mortgage papers, lease agreements, property deeds); emergency contacts; and pet records.
Share your medication list with someone you trust who lives in another town or county.
Store basic emergency supplies — such as batteries (in multiple sizes), flashlights, a first‑aid kit, backup phone chargers, and a weather radio — where you can reach them quickly.
Mahaska County is strong because its people are strong. United We Prepare is our shared commitment to looking out for one another — today, tomorrow, and whenever challenges come our way.
