Mahaska Health Paramedics Receive American Heart Association Heartsaver Hero Award

Mahaska Health paramedics Rob Forschler, Shannon Smith and Angie Goemaat were recently honored with American Heart Association Heartsaver Hero Awards in recognition of their lifesaving response to a cardiac emergency at the Oskaloosa Public Library. The awards recognize individuals who perform CPR or take lifesaving action during an emergency.

The recognition follows a coordinated emergency response that brought together Mahaska Health Emergency Services, Oskaloosa Fire, and the Oskaloosa Police Department to provide lifesaving care.

Mahaska Health team members were recognized alongside Oskaloosa firefighters and law enforcement for their response to a cardiac emergency at the Oskaloosa Public Library on June 2. Firefighters arrived first and immediately began CPR after finding the patient without a pulse and not breathing. Oskaloosa Police Officer Andrew O’Day then used an automated external defibrillator (AED) before Mahaska Health paramedics arrived and continued advanced lifesaving care. Their coordinated efforts restored the patient’s heartbeat.

“This recognition reflects the skill, preparation and teamwork our emergency responders bring to every call,” shared Mike Lang, Mahaska Health Emergency Services Director. “The quick actions of the Oskaloosa Fire and Police Departments, followed by the advanced care provided by our Mahaska Health team gave this patient the best possible chance of survival. We’re proud to work alongside first responders who are committed to caring for our community.”

Oskaloosa Fire Captain Mark Tennison, firefighters Dustin Hook and Michael Mosbey, and Oskaloosa Police Officer Andrew O’Day also received Heartsaver Hero Awards for their roles in the response. Mahaska Health appreciates the expertise and collaboration of Oskaloosa Fire Department and Oskaloosa Police Department in providing coordinated emergency care for the community.
