Rye Wins 1,500-Meter Run at Mount Mercy Event

Cedar Rapids/Des Moines–A victory by Claire Rye (Fr., Plymouth, Iowa, Biology) headlined a weekend where the William Penn women’s track and field team split up to compete in two meets Friday and Saturday.

The Statesmen battled at the Mount Mercy Mustang Carnival and Open Friday and Saturday and the Drake Jim Duncan Invitational Saturday.

Rye snatched gold in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:17.95.

Crystal Shaw (Fr., Austin, Texas, Applied Computer Science) and Phoebe Burt (Sr., Coralville, Iowa, Sociology) both tallied a silver and a bronze in Cedar Rapids.

Shaw was second in the triple jump at 35-10.75 and third in the long jump at 16-9.75, while Burt placed second in the shot put at 42-0.75 and third in the discus at 140-11.

Drake

Adedoyin Aderibigbe (Fr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Sociology) guided WPU’s efforts with two top-10 finishes. The freshman was fourth in the 100-meter dash in 12.14 seconds, while also taking 10th in the 200-meter dash in 25.06 seconds.

“We had some athletes who are coming off injuries and such, but performed really well this weekend,” Head Coach Victoria Vinokur said. “There is still a lot of work to be done and adjustments needed to be made, but they are working hard to make them.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Rapids next Saturday to compete in the Mount Mercy DeBacker Invitational.
