OFFENSE ERUPTS IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP

Marshalltown, IA – The Indian Hills Softball team moved into a tie for first-place in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) DI Softball standings with a doubleheader sweep at Marshalltown Community College on Monday. The Warriors took both ends of the series, 16-2 and 21-4.

With the sweep, Indian Hills moves to 18-18 overall and 5-1 in league play to earn a share of first place in the league standings with Southeastern Community College. The Warriors have now won five consecutive games, and nine of their last 10 ballgames. Dating back to the 2012 season, Indian Hills has now defeated Marshalltown 45 consecutive times.

The Warrior offense erupted for their most dominant showing of the year. The 16 runs in game one set a new season-high before breaking that mark with 21 runs in the nightcap. As a team, the Warriors produced 34 total hits on the day. Indian Hills has now posted a team batting average of .410 or better in each of the last four contests.

Indian Hills pulled away in game one thanks to nine runs in the top half of the fifth inning. Four different players posted multi-hit games in the opener, led by four from sophomore Cassandra Benberg (Green Bay, WI/Pulaski). Freshman Madisyn Buysse (Geneseo, IL/Geneseo) added a 3-4 performance at the plate while Mary-Paige Withers (Le Claire, IA/Pleasant Valley) went 2-4, including a home run to go along with four RBI.

Kate Hickenbottom (Davenport, IA/Davenport Assumption) delivered a grand slam in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The freshman finished the opener with two hits and five RBI.

Sophomore Maggie Grant (Onaway, MI/Inland Lakes) picked up the complete game victory in the circle, her 10th of the season. Grant allowed just two base hits and two unearned runs in the win.

Game two saw the Warriors run away from the Tigers early with two runs in the first before breaking the game open with 10 runs in the second, Indian Hills tacked on eight runs in the fifth for its highest run total of the year.

Buysse added three more hits in the nightcap while Benberg tacked on four RBI, including a home run for the Warriors. Sophomore Avery Kies (Iowa City, IA/Regina Catholic) tallied three hits while Benberg, Withers, Mary Monosmith (Ankeny, IA/Ankeny Centennial), and Bailey Tegeler (Dixon, IL/Dixon) each posted two hits in the win.

Sophomore Hannah Carter (Bethany, MO/South Harrison) scattered six hits to pick up the complete game victory for the Warriors.

With a pair of hits in each game on Monday, Buysse and Chandler Houselog (Dubuque, IA/Dubuque Hempstead) extended their season-long hitting streaks to 10 games while Hickenbottom is now riding an eight-game hitting streak.

The Warriors are back in action on April 8 with an ICCAC doubleheader vs. Southeastern Community College. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
