William Penn Faces Tough Field at Cumberlands Invite

London, Ky.–The Statesmen women’s golf team faced a tough test Monday and Tuesday as it competed at the Cumberlands Invitational.

WPU placed sixth out of six teams with a three-round score of 1,039 (345-342-352) at the par-73 Oaks of London Golf Course. Host and No. 11 Cumberlands topped the standings at 909 (304-300-305).

Atchariya Thanaudomkul of Cumberlands headlined the 33-player field at 223 (77-73-73), while Gabriana Franco (Sr., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) was the best navy and gold linkster, tying for 13th at 240 (77-82-81).

Sarah Gutuza (So., Germiston, South Africa, Political Science) was also in the top 20, ending up 18th at 248 (86-79-83).

Amelia Meador (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Kinesiology) was next, tying for 25th at 265 (93-82-90), while Chloe Jacques (Fr., Chatham, Ontario, Political Science) wrapped up the Statesmen scoring as she finished 30th at 286 (89-99-98).

“I was proud of how the ladies battled through some adversity this week,” Head Coach Darin Fisher said. “We are gaining experience, and I am starting to see moments where we play much better. This was a very strong field and the course was a good test.”

“Gabi and Sarah played consistent and had some very good stretches, but were not able to capitalize on some opportunities to really have a good tourney,” Fisher added. “Amelia and Chloe had a few holes that really slowed them, but I am happy with how they bounced back. Playing 36 holes in one day is a grind, so we need to mentally prepare for that. Overall, we need to be a bit more sharp and make better mental decisions to limit the big numbers. Next week in Kansas will be another great challenge for us.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Newton, Kan. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Bethany Classic. Play will be contested at Hesston Golf Course and Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
