Perez Wins Outright Title, Bostelman and Brenneman Share Crown at Jimmy May Open

Baldwin City, Kan.– The William Penn women’s wrestling team competed in its final regular season tournament Saturday at the Jimmy May Open, hosted by Baker. The Statesmen claimed titles at two weights, while three additional wrestlers earned podium finishes and three more secured victories on the day.

Avy Perez (Fr., Mission Hills, Calif., Nursing) captured the 110-pound title, posting a perfect 5-0 record on the day with three pinfalls and two technical falls. Perez sealed her championship run with a 2:03 fall over Dixie Holliday of Murray State.

The 131-pound weight class was controlled by the Statesmen, as Bronwyn Brenneman (Sr., Parnell, Iowa, Biology) and Kendall Bostelman (Sr., Napoleon, Ohio, Kinesiology) advanced to the championship bout. The final was forfeited, with both wrestlers awarded first place honors.

Brenneman posted a 4-0 record on the day, tallying three technical falls and one decision. Bostelman also finished 4-0, recording two technical falls and two decisions in her championship run.

Maeley Elsbury (So., Chelsea, Iowa, Undecided) earned a fourth-place finish at 145 pounds, compiling a 4-2 record on the day. In her tournament run, Elsbury secured two decisions, one technical fall, and one pin.

WPU had two wrestlers earn fifth-place finishes. Espie Almazan (So., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Political Science) posted a 5-2 record at 138 pounds, tallying five pinfalls in the tournament. At 180 pounds, Faith Barrett (So., Texico, Ill., Elementary Education) went 4-2, recording three pinfalls and one decision on her way to a fifth-place finish.

Three additional Statesmen recorded victories without placing in their respective brackets. At 117 pounds, Kylie Bustos (Sr., Amarillo, Texas, Industrial Technology) earned two wins, securing a technical fall and a pin. Kylee Eastwood (Fr., Fontana, Kan., Biology) notched two victories at 160 pounds, recording a technical fall and a decision. At 180 pounds, Ava Mirth (Fr., Florissant, Mo., Exercise Science) also collected two wins, both by pinfall.

Up Next: William Penn will travel to Marshall, Mo., on Tuesday to face Missouri Valley in its final regular season conference dual, with action set to begin at 7 p.m.
