William Penn Falls in Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa – The Statesmen women’s basketball team fell to Grand View 76-53 in Heart conference play Wednesday.

William Penn (6-14, 3-9) was outshot 53.6% to 37.3% and outrebounded 33-27 by Grand View (13-7, 10-2). William Penn forced the Vikings into 17 turnovers while committing 14. Grand View turned those turnovers into 24 points, compared to 10 for the Statesmen.

Kayla Peoples (Sr., Waco, Texas, Nursing) opened the scoring and gave William Penn an early advantage before the Vikings responded with eight unanswered points. Peoples hit a jump shot to stop the run and make it 8-4 four minutes into the first quarter.

Peoples led the Statesmen with 17 points and added five rebounds.

Grand View controlled the opening quarter, shooting 53.8% while holding William Penn to 25% and building a 21-8 lead.

The second quarter began slowly, with no scoring for the first two minutes until Grand View made a layup. Peoples hit a free throw to restart scoring for the Statesmen.

It was the lone point for William Penn until Reagan Pavesi (Jr., Austin, Texas, Wellness and Recreation) assisted Peoples on a 3-pointer to stop the Vikings’ run at 33-12 with 4:35 remaining in the first half.

William Penn then went on an 8-3 run to cut the deficit to 36-20 with just over a minute left in the half. Grand View answered to extend its lead to 39-20 at halftime.

The Vikings opened the second half with a 3-pointer before Dekota Smith (Jr., Toledo, Ohio, Computer Science) responded with a layup. Smith added another layup before Grand View connected from beyond the arc.

Smith finished with 13 points and led the team in rebounding with six.

Meghanne Freehill (Jr., Lewiston, Ill., Sports Management) knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 45-27. She finished with six points and led William Penn in assists with two.

Grand View continued to outpace the Statesmen in the third quarter, taking a 62-38 lead into the final period.

The Vikings pulled away in the fourth quarter to secure the victory in Des Moines.

Cortlynn Jackson (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Sports Management) contributed six points for William Penn.

Next up: William Penn returns home to host Clarke in conference play Saturday at 2 p.m. in Oskaloosa.
