NO. 7 WARRIORS RUN WIN STREAK TO SIX

Ottumwa, IA – No. 7 Indian Hills Men’s Basketball continued its offensive tear with a 95-61 victory over McCook Community College (NE) at the Hellyer Center on Wednesday. The Warriors improve to 12-1 overall on the year.

With the win, the Warriors extend their winning streak to six games, having scored at least 87 points in each of the victories along the way. Indian Hills has now defeated five teams by double-digits during the team’s six-game run, and nine times overall on the year. During the team’s six-game winning streak, the Warriors are outscoring their opponents by 27.7 points per game.

Wednesday’s contest marked the second time in three games the Warriors have won by at least 30 points. The win over the Indians marked the team’s second victory vs. McCook this season after picking up a win in McCook, NE on November 21 by a score of 88-73.

Sophomore Chiang Ring (Minneapolis, MN/Murray State) led six players in double-figures with a team-high 20 points. Sophomore Ater Manyuon (Austin, MN/We Are United Prep) added 16 points on 8-12 shooting while Sawyer Mayhugh (Weston, MA/Queens), this week’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) Athlete of the Week, added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman Xavier Wilson (Kansas City, MO/Staley) chipped in 12 points off the bench followed by 11 points from sophomore Chaz Watson (Kansas City, MO/Cleveland State) and 10 from sophomore Taj Au-Duke (Toronto, Canada/Pepperdine).

The Warriors dominated the Indians on the glass with a 43-22 advantage, including 13 offensive boards for 18 second chance points. Indian Hills turned 21 McCook turnovers into 33 points as four different players tallied at least two steals in the win.

Indian Hills continued its solid stretch of shooting, hitting on at least 50 percent of its field goal attempts for the fourth consecutive game. The Warriors connected on 12-23 three-point shots, the team’s third consecutive contest shooting at least 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. Indian Hills also posted a season-high 86.7 percent (13-15) from the free throw line.

Sophomore Mason Costello (Waukee, IA/Waukee) connected on a pair of three-point shots early on to give the Warriors an opening lead at the Helly Center. Back-to-back dunks from Wilson pushed the lead to 19-11 before the Indians clawed back to stay within striking distance. The Warriors closed out the opening half on a 10-2 run thanks to a pair of three-point shots from Ring and Mayhugh.

Ring contributed the first six points to open the second half as the Warrior offense erupted to pull away from the Indians. Indian Hills scored 24 of the first 26 points to open the second stanza to secure the win, the program’s eighth all-time win over the Indians in eight matchups. As a team, the Warriors shot 63.6 percent from the floor, including 58.3 percent from three-point range over the final 20 minutes of play.

Manyuon tallied 14 points alone in the second half after going 7-7 from the floor. Over the team’s last four contests, the sophomore is averaging 15.0 points per game while shooting 56.5 percent from the floor.

Mayhugh collected his fourth consecutive double-digit scoring performance, and second double-double in three contests to aid in the Warrior attack. Over the past four contests, Mayhugh is averaging 17.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

The Warriors will now hit the road for the first time since November 21 with a trip to Mineral Area College (MO) on Saturday. The Warriors and Cardinals will square off at 3:00 PM in Park Hills, MO.
