Statesmen Roll Past Eagles 31-13 in Heart Dual

Fayette, Mo.–Courtesy of seven victories, the William Penn women’s wrestling team handled No. 18 Central Methodist 31-13 in a Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet Wednesday.

No. 5 WPU (4-4, 2-1 Heart) stormed out to a commanding lead and was never threatened against CMU (3-3, 1-2 Heart).

103-pounder Lily Zapata (Fr., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) put the visitors on the board right away with a quick 10-0 technical fall over Gabriella Cedeno.

Rachel Cotter (Jr., Katy, Texas, Public Accounting) then tacked on five more points with a forfeit at 110 pounds, while Zao Estrada (Fr., Bluffton, S.C., Sociology) cruised past Victoria Nunez with a 10-0 tech fall at 117 pounds.

In the tightest match of the night, Joanna Vanderwood (Sr., Graham, Wash., Nursing) scored last in a 1-1 decision to come away victorious at 124 pounds over Allison Hynes.

131-pounder Devin Patton (Jr., Plano, Texas, Business Management) concluded her team’s five-match winning streak with a 10-0 tech fall against Corinne McClure.

Following a pair of Statesmen losses, Alexa Wolf (Fr., Rogers, Ark., Business Management) got the proverbial train back on the tracks with a fall in 2:18 over Emma Cole at 160 pounds.

180-pounder America Lopez (So., ??, Calif.) notched WPU’s final victory, claiming her Statesmen debut by pinning Grace Timmons in 3:24.

“I am proud of our performance tonight,” Head Coach Jake Kadel said. “Central Methodist was pretty scrappy and had a little extra energy from its home crowd, but our team has come a long way since the start of the year and it showed. The longer a match goes, the more it favors our wrestlers. We had some calls not go our way, but I think our team definitely had the ability to win all of tonight’s matches.”
