Jeannie Poole, 66, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, November 20, 2023, at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born November 26, 1956, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Everett and Alice McConnell Montgomery.

Jeannie attended school in Eddyville.

On October 27, 1973, Jeanie was united in marriage to Ronald Durst. To this marriage two children were born Jeffrey and Amanda. Jeannie and Ron later divorced but remained close friends.

The family lived several places in the U.S. including Colorado, Texas and Oregon, until finally settling back in Oskaloosa in 1985.

Jeannie worked as a waitress in various restaurants.

She enjoyed walking, baking, crafts, and sewing. She always looked forward to spending time with family, especially her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She always looked for opportunities to help her family and friends. Jeannie will be remembered for her kind and generous spirit.

She is survived by her daughter, Amanda (Brian) Pierce of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Christopher Mabee, Cody Kline, and Dakota Durst; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Susan Guyette of Oskaloosa; a brother, Everett (Stacy) Montgomery of Beacon; a sister-in-law, Veronica Montgomery of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents; a son Jeffrey Durst; and a brother Kirk Montgomery.

As was Jeannie’s wish her body has been cremated. A celebration of life will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, from 4-6 p.m. at the Shady Lodge in Oskaloosa. Burial of the urn will be in the Westview Cemetery in Kirkville, Iowa, at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
