Central student-athletes receive academic awards from conference

PELLA — The spring sports American Rivers Conference all-academic team was announced last Wednesday and 57 Central College student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic excellence.

The women’s track and field teams had 26 selections while the men’s team had 12. The softball program had eight while the baseball and men’s golf team had four each. Three from the men’s tennis team were also recognized. Central’s four men’s golfers were tied for the most in the league.

Nine senior student-athletes were recognized for the third time: baseball pitcher Sam Staley (Cedar Rapids, Jefferson HS), men’s golfer Lucas Wendel (Le Claire, Pleasant Valley HS), men’s tennis player Matthew Den Adel (Ankeny, Centennial HS), men’s track and field athletes Lucas Heitz (Adel, ADM HS), Jacob Sanders (Nevada) and Adam Sylvia (Rochester, Mass., Old Rochester HS), softball players Madison Farrington (Marshalltown) and Sydni Huisman (Treynor), and women’s track and field athlete Lauren Miller (Dubuque).

To qualify for the distinction, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with one year at his/her current school, achieve a 3.5 GPA or better and be on the team’s eligibility list.
