Indians Bowlers Compete At Conference Tournament
by Tony Witt
The Oskaloosa Girls and Boys Bowling teams both took 2nd place in the varsity conference tournament held this Friday and Saturday that started at 9:00am at Statesmen Lanes.
The Girls were in action on Friday and finished in 2nd place for the team event. They bowled great and couldn’t be more proud of how they bowled for the team event. They have really come together as a team and it showed on the lanes. The girls had a high game of 224 in the baker team format but unfortunately lost to the Newton girls team that was State Runner up last year.
The Osky Girls were led be Ava Ridenour in the individuals, she had a 519 series finishing in 5th place and Sidney Thompson finished in 8th place with a 497 series , while Amelia Meador finished in 15th place and bowled her first 200 game of the season with a 204 game, Kaylee Haugen finished in 17th place as well and this was out of 60 girls that competed in the individuals. I think that is pretty awesome that the Oskaloosa Girls had 4 girls in the top 20 for the individuals. The Girls will be at the State qualifying meet on Monday the 13th at Keokuk.
The Oskaloosa Boys were in action on Saturday and also finished in 2nd place for the team event. The Osky Boys had a total score in mind of what they needed to bowl for a score and they accomplished that with averaging 209.5 for the 15 baker games, which is what the team averaged last year to qualify for team state, but unfortunately it was not enough to beat Gilbert who bowled incredible for the 15 baker games with an average of 219 a game. The guys were definitely disappointed with not winning the conference but they did achieve the score that they wanted to. That is a big confidence boost for them heading into the state qualifying meet at Keokuk on Tuesday the 14th. The Osky boys were led by Trey VanWyk who placed 3rd in the individuals with a 713 series and high game of 290 for his first game. Oskaloosa was still represented well with having four other Osky boys placing in the top 20 for the individuals out of the 60 boys that competed. Alex Christ placed 8th with a 628 series, Tucker DeJong placed 14th with a 561 series, Drake Roorda placed 16th with a 560 series and Jacob Schutz finished in 20th place with a 553 series.
