WPU Dispatches Waldorf 39-9 in Home and League Opener
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s wrestling team claimed victory in eight matches Tuesday as it defeated Waldorf 39-9 in Heart of America Athletic Conference dual-meet action.
William Penn (1-0, 1-0 Heart), which took advantage of three open weights by the Warriors (0-2, 0-2 Heart), nearly blanked the visitors in its home opener.
The Statesmen had the lead in both the 125 and 285-pound weight classes, but unfortunately fell short in both bouts.
Trailing 3-0 right out of the gate, William Penn bounced back as 133-pounder Sabri Sino (Fr., Franklin, Wis., Sports Management) collected a third-period fall over Alfredo Moreno (time of 5:13) to give the hosts the lead for good.
Noah Aken (Fr., Omaha, Neb., Education) then had his hand raised by forfeit at 141 pounds before Cameron Hargrove (So., Bolingbrook, Ill., Undecided) edged out a strong battle from Tyler Okada, winning 7-3 at 149 pounds.
Kael Bunce (So., Muskegon, Mich., Industrial Technology) earned a 6-1 decision over Jalon Strong at 157 pounds, while Braden Peglow (Fr., Vail, Ariz., Business Management) kept the winning train on the tracks with a forfeit at 165.
174-pounder Matheson Meade (So., Knoxville, Tenn., Exercise Science) posted the fastest victory of the evening, pinning Roemelo Hudson in 48 seconds.
Mason Walters (So., Independence, Mo., Exercise Science) nipped Randry Mugisha in overtime 6-4 at 184 pounds, while Elijah Ramirez (Fr., El Paso, Texas, Industrial Technology) closed out his squad’s scoring with a forfeit.
“I am so proud of our performance tonight,” Head Coach Aron Scott said. “It was solid from top to bottom. We continue to improve and wrestle better each time out. This team is going to be exciting to watch as the season progresses. We are ready to get back in action this weekend.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Des Moines Saturday to compete in the Grand View Open.
