Newman, Bishop Honored as Statesmen of the Week

Oskaloosa–Men’s basketball player Karmari Newman (Sr., Detroit, Mich., Digital Communication) and women’s shotgun sports athlete Raylee Bishop (Fr., Ankeny, Iowa, Engineering Technology) have been named the Statesmen of the Week for the week of November 8-14, presented by Gardner-Collier Jewelry.

Newman erupted for a pair of 35-plus point outings in Indiana. He began with 39 points versus Indiana-South Bend on 14-for-24 shooting, including making 10 of his 16 three-pointers. Headlining his night was a go-ahead trifecta with 11 seconds remaining. The senior also tallied three rebounds and three assists.

The following day, Newman poured in 35 points against Bethel (Ind.), making 12 of his 18 tries with a 9-for-14 showing from behind the arc. He just missed a double-double, also pulling down eight rebounds in addition to two assists. In the win, Newman eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for his career.

Bishop had a big weekend at the Iowa SCTP State Championship, winning two disciplines on the female side en route to being named the Female High Overall Athlete. In helping William Penn win the team title, the freshman topped all females in Trap and Skeet and was the third-best female in Sporting Clays.
