Statesmen Place Sixth in Final Heart Commissioner’s Cup
Oskaloosa–The William Penn athletics department was in the mix all year, finishing in a solid position as the final 2020-2021 Heart of America Athletic Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings were released Wednesday.
WPU ended up sixth out of 14 institutions with 124 points, while Grand View took the title with 142.5 points.
The Commissioner’s Cup is an all-sports award that further recognizes the achievements of its student-athletes and member institutions.
The navy and gold gathered regular-season crowns in men’s basketball (tournament crown as well) and men’s bowling, while women’s bowling notched a second-place finish.
Schools are required to count point totals for the seven sports that all members sponsor (men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, and softball), along with their next six highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
WPU collected points from other high-end finishes from women’s golf (third), football and men’s soccer (fourth), and women’s wrestling and baseball (fifth). Of note, men’s outdoor track and field was also fifth, but the point tally was not amongst the top six top-scorers for WPU.
The Statesmen managed 57 points in their core seven sports and 67 points in their next six highest scorers.
Points (maximum of 13) are assigned based on conference standing at the conclusion of the regular season, while points for league sports without regular season standings are determined by the conference championship meet. Three bonus points are awarded to conference tournament champions.
