WPU Performs Well at Second Home Meet

Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s track and field team took advantage of a rare calm day at the Lacey Recreation Complex as it hosted the William Penn Statesmen Invitational Friday.

Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing) guided the navy and gold by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.35 seconds. She is now just .11 seconds away from the school record.

The 4×100-meter relay crew was also a winner Friday, collecting the crown in 49.33 seconds.

Alexandra Rose (Fr., Quincy, Ill.) made it a 1-2 finish for the Statesmen in the 100 as she earned the silver in 12.91 seconds. The freshman was also sixth in the 200-meter dash in 27.92 seconds.

Ashley Omoregie (Jr., Old Bridge, N.J., Biology) finished right behind Omoregie in the 200 at 27.97.

Michaela Kmiec (So., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science) was William Penn’s best mid-distance athlete, taking third in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.41 and eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:34.19.

Zena Cohuo (Jr., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science) took the lead for the distance runners as she was third in the 3,000-meter run (11:44.96) and fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:21.27).

On the field side, Abigaille Batu-Tiako (So., Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was a two-time high placer, taking second in the triple jump (35-2.5) and fourth in the long jump (15-11).

Deriana Bryant (So., Woodlynne, N.J.) was busy Friday, posting three top-10 finishes. The sophomore was sixth in the shot put at 35-7.25, and 10th in both the discus (110-1) and hammer (116-8).

“Today was a great day for our team as we posted a lot of personal bests,” Head Coach Allen Friesen said.

Next Up: William Penn will travel to Des Moines next Friday to compete in the Grand View Viking Classic.
