Dorothy Mae Pottorff, age 82, of Bussey, passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Monroe Care Center in Albia, IA. Dorothy was born on October 2, 1938, to Roy G. and Francis M. (Comstock) Walter in Marysville, IA.
Dorothy grew up and attended school in Marysville and later in Lovilia, graduating from the Lovilia High School.
On December 24, 1956, she was united in marriage to Orval Lee “Pete” Pottorff in Bussey, IA. To this union, 5 children were born, Rebecca, Denise, Leanna, Laurie, and Kenny. Dorothy and Orval later divorced.
Dorothy was a very hard worker and was always busy. She held many jobs over the years, including working at home on the farm, the Albia Sale Barn Café, in housekeeping at the Indian Hills Inn in Albia, and bartending at the Albia American Legion, Albia Eagles Club, and Duffy’s Bar in Bussey. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary as well as the American Legion Auxiliary and once served as Madam President. She assisted with setting up for many wedding dinners at the Eagles and Legion. She owned and operated Mom’s Nostalgic Inn Restaurant and also sold Avon for 32 years, as well as World Book Encyclopedias and Amway products.
Dorothy was very active and was a dedicated mother who enjoyed spending time with her family.
Dorothy is survived by 4 children: Rebecca Williams of Oskaloosa, Leanna Bregar of Bussey, Laurie (& Kevin) James of Knoxville, and Kenny Pottorff of Bussey; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Goldie (& Fred) Kraber of Lovilia; and sisters-in-law, Jean Walters of Bussey and Betty Walter of Marysville.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Mason; her parents, Roy and Francis Walter; 5 brothers; 3 sons-in-law; and her ex-husband.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Dorothy’s family present to greet family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 13, 2021, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Raymond Doser officiating.
Burial will follow services at the Marysville Cemetery in Marysville, IA.
An open memorial has been established to the family.
