Alla Mae Helm, 82 of New Sharon passed away peacefully at her home in New Sharon. Alla Mae Helm, the daughter of Everett and Tuni (Gosselink) Heyveld, was born on February 13, 1939 in Pella, Iowa.

Alla Mae graduated from Pella High School.

Alla Mae was married to Dan Crosby in 1956. To this union eight children were born: Laurie, Valerie, Craig, Pat, Pam, Jeff, Danny and Brad.

Alla Mae was a wonderful mother and enjoyed taking care of her children and family. When her children were a little older, she went to work at the New Sharon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she was the head dietician. Dan and Alla Mae later divorced but remained great friends. Alla Mae then moved to Florida with a close friend, David Helm, and continued to work for local nursing homes. They eventually married and moved back to New Sharon in 1993. She worked at the New Sharon Nursing and Rehabilitation Center again before eventually retiring to babysit her grandchildren. She also taught a local knitting night class for a year in New Sharon.

Family was very important to Alla Mae and she enjoyed spending time with them and having family game nights. She also stayed very active with crafts, knitting, crocheting, puzzles and watching scary movies. She was an avid reader and was a member of a Stephen King Book Club.

Her legacy will be honored by her children: Valerie (& Dan) Ridnouer of Dike, Craig (& Lynn) Crosby of Eddyville, Pat Crosby of New Sharon, Pam (& Garland) Stidham of New Sharon, Jeff (& Sara) Crosby of North Liberty, Danny (& Ruby) Crosby of Florida and Brad (& Mary) Crosby of New Sharon; 28 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; a sister, Judy Loverock of Florida; her brother, Tony Heyveld of Florida; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Alla Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David Helm; a daughter, Laurie Van Alst; two brothers, Everett Heyveld and David Heyveld; good friend and father of her children, Dan Crosby; and special friend, Jack Dawley.

As was her wish, her body will be cremated and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Stephens Animal Rescue League and may be sent to the funeral home at Holland-Coble Funeral Home, In Care of Alla Mae Helm, P.O. Box 85, New Sharon, Iowa 50207.
