Spartans stymie Dutch volleyball team

PELLA — The Central College volleyball team came up short against the University of Dubuque Saturday afternoon, falling 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

“The biggest thing for us is that we have three goals we want to achieve each match and we didn’t necessarily put those into action,” “Dubuque played a great match which kept us from achieving those goals.”

The Spartans (3-4, 3-3 American Rivers Conference) ended the Dutch (3-4, 3-4 conference) winning streak at two games.

Amanda Smith (sophomore, setter, Tipton) had her second double-double of the week with 28 assists and 12 digs.

“She’s been working hard,” Czipri said. “The team loves playing for her.,”

Krissa Larson (junior, outside hitter, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and Kayleigh Fite (senior, middle hitter, Florissant, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) both had 12 kills. Larson had a hitting percentage of .333 (12-2-30) with Larson at .111 (12-8-36).

“They carried us offensively,” Czipri said.

Libero Landry Luhring (junior, Grundy Center) had 15 digs and Fite was in on five blocks. Kate Pachner (sophomore, Akron, Colo.) and DaLana Kron (senior, West Branch) each had eight digs as defensive specialists.

Central closes out the season next Saturday at Luther College. A win would give Central its first .500 record in conference play since 2016.

“We really want to get one more match in,” “We feel good about our energy and the type of volleyball we are playing. If we can get some good days of practice and get one more good win.”
