Kenneth Leroy Doty, Sr., 82, of Oskaloosa died Monday, October 26, 2020, at his daughter’s home in Oskaloosa. He was born August 26, 1938, in Keokuk County, Iowa, the son of Clyde and Minnie Mae Garrett Doty, Sr.
Ken attended Oskaloosa schools.
Following school, he worked part-time for area farmers including one year at Ruby’s Fur Farm.
When Ken was ‘almost’ old enough he enlisted in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to Oskaloosa.
In 1958 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Anderson. To this union two children were born, Kenneth Doty, Jr. and Tamara Sue. Marilyn and Ken later divorced.
In 1964, he was united in marriage to Dixie Ballou. In 1974 they divorced.
He worked for 18 years at Pepsi Cola in Oskaloosa. He then worked four years at Anderson Electric. Last he worked for Oskaloosa Foods. He retired from there in 2002, after 18 years of service. He was very mechanical and worked as the head of maintenance at both Pepsi and Oskaloosa Foods.
In 1988, he was united in marriage to Judy Van Dusseldorp, after 26 years of marriage they divorced in 2014.
Ken enjoyed woodworking, building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, riding motorcycles and four-wheelers, and enjoying nature with his family. He was a talented handyman that always had the knowledge and correct tool to fix the problem.
His family includes his two children, Kenneth Doty, Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Tammie (& Mike) Fortney of Oskaloosa; an adopted son, Nathan Doty of Oskaloosa; five grandchildren: Alicia Doty, Austin Doty, Hunter Doty, Megan Doty, and Matthew Doty; three brothers and their wives: John and Susan Doty of Oskaloosa, Clyde and Nancy Doty, Jr. of Oskaloosa, and Donald and Bonnie Doty of What Cheer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Viola Snook, Betty Snook, and Carol Mayfield; and a brother, Robert “Bob” Doty.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 31, 2020, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend David Brown officiating.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The funeral service will be live streamed at the funeral home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.
Visitation will begin Friday, October 30, 2020, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4-6 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association.
