Statesmen Take Down Mount Mercy
Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s golf team took on Mount Mercy on Monday in a one-on-one match at Edmundson Golf Course. The rain over the weekend did not affect the course and the Statesmen played well over 36 holes. The navy and gold scored 316 on the first 18 holes and shot 322 over the next round to win by a final score of 638 to 677. Brittany Evans (Sr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) won the individual category with rounds of 77-71 for a first-place finish of 148.
Bailee Frayne (So., Garner, Iowa, Elementary Education) had rounds of 80 and 82 to finish tied for second with a combined score of 162.
Alexis Guimaraes (Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) tied Frayne with a 162, scoring 76 in the first round, the lowest of everyone. She then hit 86 the second time around.
Julia Hippely (So., Huron, Ohio, General Accounting) was the consistent hand, shooting two scores of 83 to finish fourth in the individual rankings with a score of 166.
Jaclyn Wojciechowski (Fr., Graytown, Ohio, Business Management) was within a couple shots of Hippely, as the freshman scored 85 and 86 to finish with a 171 on the day.
“Today as a great day for golf. We had a special opportunity to come out and defend our home turn in front of our community,” said head coach Bailey Rimes. “The course played pretty hard today but the girls really grinded through the ups and downs. We had a couple mental mistakes that probably cost us a few strokes but that’s golf. It is not going to be perfect. At the end of the day we’re pretty happy with the end result and are looking forward to making small improvements heading into the home stretch of the fall season.”
Next up: The Statesmen will have a couple of weeks to gear up for the TPC Deer Run Invitation on Oct. 12-13 in Silvis, Ill.
