Mahaska County 4-H will offer six different and unique learning opportunities for youth this June. The 4-H Summer Fun Day Camps are open to any youth, not just those who are members of 4-H or Clover Kids. Funding provided by Mahaska County Community Foundation, Mahaska County ISU Extension & Outreach and Mahaska County United Way is making these camps possible. “We’re offering camps to anyone who has completed Kindergarten through 8th grade this summer and we’re very excited about each one!”, said Codi Workman, Educational Programs Assistant for ISU Extension and Outreach in Mahaska County.

Babysitting Basics will be offered on June 10, 11, and 12 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Extension office for youth who have completed 6th-8th grade. Participants will learn about caring for children and safety for in-home babysitting. Team Challenge is a hands-on camp for youth who have completed 6th-8th grade. Participants will meet at the Fairgrounds on June 13-14 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. to work with visitors from the Adventure Learning Center in Polk County. They will gain skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, and citizenship. On June 17-18, youth who have completed Kindergarten-3rd grade can take part in the Bug Zoo camp at the Extension office from 9:00 a.m.-Noon. Participants will learn about insects from the ISU Insect Zoo guest speakers; participants will also enjoy making buggy crafts and learning the science of bugs! On June 17-18 from 1:00-4:00 p.m., youth who have completed 4th-6th grade will have a blast programming and building Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Rockin’ Robotics camp at the Extension office. Anyone who has just completed Kindergarten-3rd grade will turn into mad scientists at the Grossology camp on June 19-20 from 9:00 a.m.-Noon at the Extension office. Grossology will cover the “gross stuff” about the humans and animals and participants will create ooey, gooey, fluffy and fizzy science experiments. Older youth who have just completed 4th-6th grade can learn what it takes to be a veterinarian at the Vet Detective camp on June 19-20 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Extension office. They will learn from a real veterinarian about animals – including care, common problems and some very interesting patients they have had. Snacks will be provided at each camp.

Participants will need to bring a sack lunch to Babysitting Basics & Team Challenge. Costs of camps range from $20-30.00. Space is limited, so register today! Registration deadline is June 3. Visit www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska/4h to learn more and to find a registration form. Full details can be found at the Mahaska County ISU Extension and Outreach office at 212 North I Street in Oskaloosa.
