Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Southern Iowa Fair officially started on Monday, but a few contests took place before the fair. One of those was the dog obedience and agility contest and show.

Regina Hoy said that the show is put on by the Mahaska County 4-H. The annual event has been a staple of the fair for many years.

The dogs and their owners have thirteen weeks of classes leading up to the show. Hoy said, “We actually start our season back in April and we practice every week.”

There are five different classes that are broken up by skill level. So as the dog and owner progress through the program over the years, they move up to the different classes.

Puppies as young at 10 weeks old have started in the program and on up to older dogs. “So it just depends on when the kid starts in 4-H,” Hoy said.

Thirty-Four kids and dogs were part of this years competition, which is more than Hoy has ever had. The group is not just county kids and/or city kids, it’s a mix of the two groups.

Hoy says that “the kids work really hard for the 13 weeks,” and work hard at home with their dogs as well. “It’s a really intensive project because they have to work with their dog every day at home, not just when we practice at class.”
