The 2nd Annual OHS Alumni Reunion is fast approaching and you won’t want to miss it! The gathering takes place in Oskaloosa June 6, 7 and 8 in conjunction with Thankful Thursday, Friday After Five and Art on the Square. A small team representing several graduating classes from Oskaloosa High School have been making plans for a fun weekend. Over 300 alumni attended the gathering last summer from classes ranging from the late 1940’s to 2018. It’s anticipated that this year’s event will easily surpass last year’s attendance.
The goal of the planning team was to create an event where alumni from all classes could socialize and to get alumni back to Oskaloosa to enjoy and support our wonderful community and downtown. The team was excited to partner with events already happening that weekend and also added a couple of fun activities to raise money for the 52577 Scholarship Fund. The 52577 Scholarship Fund was created by the graduating class of 1977 which graduated on May 25 and provides scholarships to graduating seniors.
The festivities begin with Thankful Thursday in the Alley on June 6 from 6:00-8:00 pm with drinks sponsored by three alumni: Tom Reilly (1981) with Reilly Insurance, Wade Davidson (1999) with Rock Island Tap, and the 52577 Scholarship Foundation. Music in the Alley is by Nick Neibauer, followed by the City Band in the bandstand at 8:00 pm. For more information visit The Alley on Facebook.
On Friday June 7, Art on the Square begins at 5:00 pm. The popular Friday After Five event begins at 6:00pm and goes until 9:30pm. Friday After Five is geared toward families who want to come to the square to listen to local bands, enjoy food from local vendors and relax at the end of the work week. Providing great music will be local favorites Small Town Superheroes and joining them on stage is Rock Bottom. Both bands are led by OHS alum. Small Town Superheroes consists of: Amy Simmons, Terry DeJong (1979), Tim DeJong (1978), John Hoekstra; Bob Edwards. Rock Bottom band members are: Billy Ryan (1983), Bob Edwards, Roger Todd, Eric Boetger, who is a member of the Iowa Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Also on Friday is a Bags tournament, sponsored by Mahaska Drug, beginning at 6:00 pm. It will be located in the street on the NE corner of the square. This is a fundraiser for the 52577 Scholarship Fund and you can register by contacting Theresa Grahek at Signatures Salon 641-672-0998.
The gathering continues on Saturday June 8 with Art on the Square from 9:00-4:00 pm. A new element added to the Alumni Reunion is a 4-person best ball golf tournament coordinated by Doug DeKock & John Grahek. Funds raised will also go to the 52577 Scholarship Fund. It begins at Osky Golf at 10:30 am to play the front nine holes. The back nine holes will be played at Edmundson Golf beginning at 1:30 pm. You can play one or both sessions. Of course we want ALL area residents to join OHS alumni and enjoy the weekend’s events. Everyone is welcome to enter the bags & golf tournaments; you do not need to be an OHS grad to play. Looking forward to seeing everyone June 6, 7 & 8 in downtown Oskaloosa!
