Rock Island, Ill.–The Statesmen women’s golf team got off to a roaring start to its 2018-2019 season as it took the title at the Augustana Highland Classic Saturday and Sunday.

#13 William Penn was first out of eight teams with a two-day score of 617 (312-305) at the par-72 Highland Springs Golf Course. Host Augustana was second at 636 (321-315).

Not including last year’s national tournament, the navy and gold have now won four consecutive tournaments.

Elise Warne (Sr., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) guided the Statesmen to the victory, finishing first out of 62 players at 152 (77-75).

Just two strokes back, in a tie for second, was Helene Larsen (Sr., Viborg, Denmark, Business Management) at 152 (76-78). Brittany Evans (Jr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) also finished in the top five, taking fifth at 155 (81-74).

Alexis Guimaraes (Jr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) was next in sixth at 156 (78-78), while Megan Rhoads (Sr., Schertz, Texas, Psychology) tied for 12th at 162 (84-78).

Individually, Bailee Frayne (Fr., Garner, Iowa, Elementary Education) had a wonderful start to her collegiate career, finishing 10th at 159 (81-78).

“What a great way to start the season!” Head Coach Chris Pierson said. “We had some first tournament hiccups on Saturday, but everyone did a fantastic job dealing with them. We talked about it between rounds and everyone came out the second day and played great. Any time you can get everyone in the 70s it is a great day. This was a fantastic team effort!”

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to North Sioux City, S.D. on September 14-15 to compete in the Briar Cliff Lila Frommelt Classic. Play will be contested at Two Rivers Golf Course.
