WPU Tallies 1-2 Record at Heart Duals

Lamoni–The Statesmen wrestling program met its final three league opponents as it competed at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Duals Saturday.

William Penn (3-5) opened the day by defeating Benedictine 25-24, but then the squad fell to #5 Missouri Valley 43-6 in the semifinals and #18 Baker (Kan.) 28-19 in the consolation round.

WPU 25, Benedictine (Kan.) 24

John Altieri (Fr., Warwick, R.I., Sociology) opened the meet by receiving a forfeit at 125 pounds. 149-pounder Bryan Pittman (Sr., Flossmoor, Ill., Information Technology) then added to the Statesmen tally with a 15-3 major decision over Josh Romero.

Johnny Hopper (So., Basehor, Kan., Psychology) snatched a 15-10 decision against Kaleb Mitchel at 165, and 184-pounder Cody Jones (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) pinned Connor Kenyon, but it came down to a forfeit at heavyweight to Matthew Cuthbert (Fr., Yucaipa, Calif., Sociology) to secure the win.

Missouri Valley 43, WPU 6

Altieri started things well with a 3-2 victory against Alexander Juarez, while Fabian Rodriguez (Fr., Manassas, Va., Business Management) dropped Noah Reid 6-3. Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not pull off any more wins against the Vikings.

Baker 28, WPU 19

Altieri finished off his perfect day with another decision, this time over Logan McDowell, 9-3. Tommy Rios (Fr., Tucson, Ariz., Exercise Science) broke into the win column at 133 by pinning Zane Baugh. Rodriguez then capped off the great start with a 15-4 major decision triumph over Colby Watters.

The Wildcats stormed back with six straight wins to lock up the dual, but Matthew Cuthbert had the final points of the day with another forfeit.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. next Sunday to compete in the Missouri Valley Open.
