WPU Takes Fourth at Midland Tournament

Lincoln, Neb.–The William Penn shotgun sports team competed well in the biggest tournament in its young history as it faced off at the Midland Warrior Open last Friday through Sunday.

The Statesmen placed fourth out of 12 teams, hitting 1,907 out of 2,000 total targets for a 95.35% rate. The top five teams were separated by just 25 targets.

The event opened with Double Skeet and Maclane Heinen (So., Pella, Iowa, Business Management) took the squad lead by going 47-for-50. Dominick Ver Meer and Mathew Brindley were right behind him at 46-for-50, while the quartet of Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (Jr., Kansas City, Mo., Business Management), Jarrett DeKoning (So., Grinnell, Iowa, Public Accounting and Business Management), Noah DeBoef (Fr., Leighton, Iowa, Industrial Technology), and Gideon Boender (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Industrial Technology) finished 45-for-50. Ashley Hunter also had a personal best for the women at 44-for-50.

Super Sporting was next and Berkshire-Lewis and DeBoef topped the navy and gold at 44-for-50, while Heinen was one shot back at 43-for-50. Brindley and Raylee Bishop rounded out the team’s scoring at 41-for-50.

Heinen again headlined the Statesmen scoring with a 99-for-100 outing in Skeet. Ver Meer was also near the top at 98-for-100, while Brindley and Jake Campbell (Fr., Norwalk, Iowa, Industrial Technology) posted 96-for-100 showings. Hunter Lucas (Jr., Washington, Iowa) and Bishop were both 95-for-100 as William Penn missed the event title by only six shots.

Noah Seelye (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) guided his crew in Sporting Clays with a 95-for-100 effort, while Bryon Baca (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) was second at 93-for-100. The scores from DeBoef (92-for-100), Berkshire-Lewis (91-for-100), and Campbell (89-for-100) also counted.

The Trap competition concluded the weekend and the navy and gold again were in the mix, falling to Midland by just seven targets. Bishop was the squad’s leader at 99-for-100, while Heinen, Seelye, J. DeKoning, and Berkshire-Lewos all ended up at 97-for-100.

“This weekend showed us how close we are as a team to competing against some of the biggest shotgun teams out there, and in only our second year,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “I hope each one of our team members learned something very important this past weekend. We can and will succeed!”
