Oskaloosa Mail Carrier Honored for Helping Elderly Woman After Fall

Oskaloosa, IA – City Carrier Jeff Miller was finishing up a loop when he heard a faint call of “Mailman!” Unsure where it was coming from, he looked around and realized it was from behind a nearby home. There, he found an elderly woman lying in the backyard. When Jeff asked what was wrong, she explained that she had fallen and believed she had broken her hip or leg. Jeff immediately called 911 and stayed with the woman until paramedics arrived. He even wrote her son a note to notify him that his mother had been taken to the hospital. Thanks to Jeff’s quick thinking, compassion, and willingness to help, she received the care she urgently needed. Jeff stated, “I am glad I heard her call our, she had been lying there for over an hour with several cars passing by but not stopping.”

Mr. Miller has just received a Postmaster General Award for his heroic actions. This award is for postal employees that go above and beyond the call of duty and can be the first people to notice that something is wrong. There are over 5,000 PMG Heroes that have been recognized since 2003 when the program began. Supervisor Customer Services, Jon Roen stated, “Jeff has always been an exceptional carrier who takes great pride in serving his customers and community.”
