Springfield, Mo.–The Statesmen softball team was short-handed in the runs department Saturday as it was swept by Evangel in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

William Penn (13-38, 7-28 Heart) fell by scores of 6-2 and 5-0.

The Crusaders (20-20, 16-22 Heart) opened the day with three runs in the first inning. The visitors answered with one in the second as Lexi Herbert (Jr., King City, Mo., Secondary Education) singled home Chyanne Koko (Sr., Waianae, Hawaii, Physical Education).

EU, which outhit WPU 12-6, tacked on another three-spot in in the fourth before the Statesmen rallied for one in the seventh. Tess Cheetham (Jr., Oceanside, Calif., Human Services and Sociology) recorded a pinch-hit single and came around on another Herbert single.

Unfortunately, that was all William Penn could muster. Herbert and Sonia Reddy (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) were both 2-for-3 to guide the visiting crew.

Dalaney Bice (So., Woodward, Iowa, Human Services & Psychology) had a base knock and drew a walk in the second game, but little else went right for WPU in the nightcap. The team was outhit 9-3, while Katie Springer (Jr., Riverside, Iowa, Undecided) struck out five in the setback.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Sunday to face Central Methodist in a single Heart contest at 1 p.m. The game is a rescheduled matchup from a postponement back on March 31.
