WPU Opens Spring Campaign at Missouri Western Classic

St. Joseph, Mo.–The Statesmen women’s golf team competed against a field of mostly bigger schools and finished in the top half as it opened its spring season at the Holiday Inn Express Classic hosted by Missouri Western Monday and Tuesday.

William Penn finished sixth out of 14 teams with a two-day score of 662 (332-330) at the par-72 St. Joseph Country Club. NCAA Division II Central Missouri won the event at 632 (315-317); the tournament consisted of nine D-II programs.

Shi Qing Ong of host Missouri Western topped the 82-player field at 148 (70-78).

Elise Warne (Sr., Melbourne, Australia, Exercise Science) headlined WPU’s efforts by tying for ninth at 160 (77-83). Brittany Evans (Jr., Fernley, Nev., Business Management) was also in the top 20, tying for 19th at 165 (83-82).

Bailee Frayne (Fr., Garner, Iowa, Elementary Education) was next in a tie for 25th at 167 (85-82), while Megan Rhoads (Sr., Schertz, Texas, Psychology) tied for 35th at 170 (87-83). Alexis Guimaraes (Jr., San Ramon, Calif., Psychology) wrapped up the team scoring as she tied for 43rd at 173 (90-83).

Julia Hippely (Fr., Huron, Ohio, General Accounting) competed as an individual as well, finishing in a tie for 52nd at 177 (84-93).

“The team competed hard, showed some character, and is moving in the right direction heading into the next tournament,” Head Coach Victoria Grasso said.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Carbondale, Ill. Sunday and Monday to compete in the Southern Illinois Invitational at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
