WPU Offense Stifled Against Vikings

Des Moines–The Statesmen softball team was unable to muster any offense as it was swept by Grand View in a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

William Penn (21-19, 14-12 Heart) fell by scores of 4-0 and 6-0.

The visitors, who were outhit 8-2 in the opener, were knotted in a scoreless tie entering the bottom of the third, but GVU (39-5, 28-2 Heart) put three runs on the board in that frame. The home team added one more in the fourth.

Valeria Quiroga (Jr., Brownsville, Texas, Sociology) supplied the only offense for the navy and gold, tallying a single in the first, drawing a walk in the fourth, and doubling in the seventh to finish 2-for-2 overall. Peyton Parker (Sr., LaPorte City, Iowa, Sports Management) took the loss, but held her own in the circle. The senior allowed four runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking three.

The nightcap was a near mirror image of the first contest with the Statesmen being shut out and losing the hits battle 13-2. William Penn was able to put runners on base in each of the first three frames, but could not advance anyone past first base.

Abby Wilson (Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Biology) and Charley Geguzis (So., Williamsburg, Iowa) managed one base knock each. Hayle Hacker (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Nursing and Human Services) took over pitching duties in the third frame and was more than competent, giving up only one run on six scattered hits in 3 2/3 innings. The freshman tallied four strikeouts without a walk.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Lamoni Wednesday to face Graceland in a Heart doubleheader at 4 p.m.
