Oskaloosa–The Statesmen women’s golf team opened its fall season with a second-place effort as it hosted the Statesmen Invitational Monday and Tuesday.

WPU was second out of five teams with a two-round score of 633 (319-314) at the par-70 Edmundson Golf Course. Mount Mercy won the team crown at 611 (299-312).

Mount Mercy had a sweep of the honors as the Mustangs’ Aoi Ito took home the medalist honor at 150 (74-76).

Gabriana Franco (So., Tracy, Calif., Exercise Science) guided the navy and gold at 154 (76-78), while Olivia Lange (Jr., Buckeburg, Germany, Business Management) was one stroke behind her 155 (78-77); both individuals placed in the top five.

Carlee Frayne (Sr., Garner, Iowa, Sport Management) was next at 159 (79-80), while Bliss Martin (So., Hamilton, Ill., Biology) finished at 166 (87-79).

Emma Lawson (Jr., Rossville, Ind., Exercise Science) concluded the varsity grouping at 167 (86-81).

Olivia Cramer (Jr., Lawton, Mich., Civil Engineering and Applied Mathematics) headlined the reserve players who were also in competition as she finished at 169 (86-83).

“Our top three returners–Olivia, Gabi, and Carlee–all had solid performances this week,” Head Coach Elise Warne said. “Unfortunately, we were simply outplayed by a team that had an incredible first day.”

“It hurts losing at home, but we always talk about how the fall is for building, finding our lineup, and practicing our execution of our strategy on the course,” Warne added. “I know our players are fired up to work hard the next couple weeks before our next tournament.”

Next: William Penn is off for two weeks before it travels to Le Mars on September 18-19 to compete in the Northwest Iowa National Invitational. Play will be contested at the Willow Creek Golf Course.
