Wood & Dejong Repeat, Haring Scores First Ever SIS Win
6/22/22 By: Jerry Mackey
Oskaloosa, Iowa: Mother Nature finally gave the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa a perfect night for racing and the fans responded by coming out in big numbers to support the racing action on the ½ mile on the Mahaska County Fairgrounds. Hot laps got underway promptly at 7: 15 with the final checkered flag of the night waving at 10 pm.
Nathan Wood scored his second consecutive win in the MidState Machine Stock Car class. Wood broke a 2 year dry spell with the win a week ago and came back to score another win this week. Wood took the green flag in the main event from the sixth starting position and quickly caught front runner, Cayden Carter. Wood was able to make the pass for the lead on lap four but was not able to shake the 1X of Carter. The two Osky veterans battled until Carter dropped out of the race with two laps to go. Wood went on to score the win ahead of Jason McDaniel and Donnie Pearson. Wood stated in victory lane, “ Osky gets a bad rap as a track that is hard on motors, that is not the case, there are tracks up north that take way more motor because they run the tracks so wet, our guys do a great job of giving us a smooth slick track that takes less motor to run.”
The Oskaloosa Quality Rental Sportmods saw Maguire Dejong shoot into the race lead from his front row start and go on to score a very convincing win. Dejong was on a rail and led the non stop feature flag to flag. Jason Roth from Hazel Green, Wisconsin started a five day family racing vacation on Wednesday night by visiting the Southern Iowa Speedway. In his first ever visit to Osky, Roth ran a very strong second beating Osky veteran Curtis VanDerWal and Kyle Harwood to the finish line.
The Parker Tree Service Hobby Stocks provided another outstanding feature race with close racing for the lead the entire distance. Dustin Griffiths advanced from his fifth position start to overtake early leader Austin Barnes and race on to record the win. Griffiths held off last weeks winner Brad Stephens late in the race to record the win in the race nights finale. Stephens was able to catch Griffiths late in the race but was not able to make the pass of the smooth running Griffiths. Trevor Tanner came on strong late in the race to take third.
Hometown driver James Haring scored his first ever win in the Dirt N Asphalt Sport Compacts. After years of racing locally Haring was finally able to notch a win in getting to the checkers just ahead of point leader, Terry Bickford. Seth Meinders drove his #16 to a third place finish.
Ben Woods was also a repeat winner on Wednesday night scoring the 10 lap feature win in the Clow Valve Company Non-Wing Sprint Car main event. Woods raced in second until lap eight when he was able to overtake leader Doug Sylvester. The 12 of Sylvester ran second ahead of Tyler Graves.
Wednesday, June 29th will be Dickey Transport/ Middlekoop Seeds Kids Night featuring a nickel and candy scramble during intermission. Hot laps will get underway at 7:15pm.
