Oskaloosa, IA – William Penn University presented the 2012 Torch Award to the Clifford Eugene ‘Gene’ and Barbara Hasley Long family on Friday, September 28 at the 2012 Homecoming Recognition Banquet. This award was initiated during the 1972 Parent’s Weekend as a way to acknowledge and honor alumni and non-alumni parents who have shown exceptional commitment to William Penn. The award is given to an alumni family of at least two generations; or to non-alumni parents, all of whose children have attended Penn.

The Long family tree extends in both directions and has several generations of Penn alumni on either side. Barbara’s parents, Floyd (1932) and Helen McKibben (1933) Hasley met at Penn and three of their five children went on to become Penn alumni as well. Gene (1970) and Barbara (1971) married in 1971. They had three children; Sheryl, Kevin, and Greg (1984), and four grandchildren.

After earning his BA in 1970, Gene taught and farmed northwest of Montezuma. He left teaching and in 1984 briefly worked for FmHA. He retired after twenty years with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service as the Director for Tama County. He currently keeps busy with their farm and doing part-time work for the insurance company.

Barb taught at Lynnville-Sully schools for nine years and then purchased a fabric store in Montezuma, which she sold in 1990. She then pursued her masters’ degree from Iowa State University. Barb became technology coordinator at Montezuma for six years before retiring in 2003. She stays very active with her quilting group, which quilts for charity and has several William Penn alumnae. The Long Family association with William Penn spans over four generations. For their continual support of education, William Penn University is pleased to honor the Clifford Eugene and Barbara Hasley Long Family with the 2012 Torch Award.
