Oskaloosa–The Statesmen volleyball squad has been selected to place fifth as the Midwest Collegiate Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released today.

William Penn, which finished last year with a 15-30 mark (1-5 MCC), garnered 18 points to be tied for fifth with Mount Mercy.

Grand View is projected to defend its regular season crown (GVU also won the tourney title in 2013), notching 48 points with six first-place votes. Viterbo is right there in second with 43 points and the last first-place vote.

Clarke and its 34 points are third, while St. Ambrose is fourth with 28 points. AIB finishes off the poll with seven points.

WPU’s 2014 campaign begins on August 23 with a triangular in Peru, Neb. against host Peru State and Presentation (S.D.). A matchup versus Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids on September 24 will serve as the team’s first league contest.
