William Penn Succumbs to Baker in Road Dual
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s wrestling team claimed four bonus-point victories, but it was not enough to get over the top in a 31-19 Heart of America Athletic Conference dual meet loss to Baker Thursday.
On a night where all but one of the matches were won by bonus points, WPU (0-2, 0-2 Heart) fell behind after losing the first bout.
133-pounder Lane Scorpil (Jr., Columbus Junction, Iowa, Business Management) answered right back, evening the score at 5-5 by crushing Christian Nishi-Rivera by a 17-1 technical fall.
Carson Jensen (Jr., Idaho Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) then put the navy and gold on top at 10-5 with a technical fall of his own at 141 pounds, rolling over Cavin Peper 21-6.
Back-to-back wins by the Wildcats (1-0, 1-0 Heart), however, gave them back the advantage at 13-10, but it was short-lived as 165-pounder Cameron Hargrove (Sr., Bolingbrook, Ill., Sports Management) made easy work of Noah Sample with a 19-3 technical fall.
Kendal Pugh (So., Letts, Iowa, Business Management) then extended the margin to 19-13 with an 11-0 major decision triumph over Kemandrell Hamilton.
Unfortunately, BU won the three remaining matches of the evening and took the meet win.
“Tonight’s dual did not go as planned as we gave up a couple bonus-point losses and also had to forfeit a weight class,” Head Coach Drew Sams said. “However, I think that we brought a group of guys who competed at a high level. Unfortunately, we need to work on wrestling more controlled matches overall. The guys who went out and secured wins did so in a dominant fashion. I am excited to get this group back in the room and continue building.”
