Pikeville, Ky.–The teams may share part of their names, but the similarities stopped there as the
Statesmen men’s basketball squad controlled from tip to buzzer in a 100-77 win over Central Penn (Pa.) at the Pikeville Tournament Saturday.

#3 WPU (2-0) scored the first eight points of the day and pulled out to a 27-7 edge midway through the first half. The navy and gold, who outshot the Knights 47.9%-33.8%, kept pushing and eventually led 49-21 at intermission.

The advantage grew to as much as 38 at 93-55 in the waning minutes before CPC closed on a decent run to make the final score not appear so lopsided.

Although turnovers were still an issue (20 committed in the game), the Statesmen succeeded in all other departments, including shooting 81.0% at the line and 40.6% from behind the arc.

Corbin Medley (Sr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) hit from all over the court en route to a team-high 22 points. The senior was 6-for-9 from the field, including making five three-pointers; he also knocked down all five charity throws he had.

The quartet of Dominique Shaw (Sr., Lufkin, Texas, Wellness and Recreation), Jovontae Carleton (Jr., El Cerrito, Calif., Sociology), Terrell Thompson (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind., Wellness and Recreation), and Mikeal Donaldson (Sr., Columbia, S.C.) also reached double figures.

Shaw poured in 19 points, while Carleton was next with 18 points in addition to two steals. Donaldson and Thompson, who also dished out six assists, contributed 12 points as well.

JC Washington (Sr., Houston, Texas, Sociology) and Marquis Todd (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Wellness and Recreation) finished with five points apiece; Washington also corralled eight rebounds, while Todd blocked a trio of Knight shots.

“Corbin and Marquis were both great off the bench today,” Head Coach John Henry said. “We are battling a lot of small injuries so winning these games from this far away from home is a big deal.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Portsmouth, Ohio Sunday to face Shawnee State in non-conference action at noon (Central).
