Sioux City–The Statesmen men’s soccer team notched an early goal, but could not keep the equalizer out of the net as it returned home with a 1-1 non-conference tie with Morningside Tuesday.

WPU (3-0-1), which held a 12-7 edge in shots, attempted to be 4-0 for just the second time in program history (also in 2014), but fell just short of that achievement.

Joseph Kitengie (Sr., Benoni, South Africa, Business Management) scored an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute to break the scoreless tie.

The visitors entered the locker room with that same 1-0 advantage, but the Mustangs eventually answered in the 58th minute. Despite having five additional tries on target, the navy and gold were unable to get another tally.

Kitengie guided the offense with five shots, while Edan Sears (Jr., Telford, England, Sports Management) added three more attempts.

Sean Bohan (Jr., Dublin, Ireland, Business Management) continued his unblemished start as a Statesmen with four saves.

“We created enough chances to win the game and definitely feel like we left a win up there,” Head Coach Simon Brown said. “When you let good teams like Morningside hang around, they find ways to get back into the game and that is what hurt us today. We will now have to recover before our long trip south to face two of the best teams in the country.”
