William Penn Races Under the Lights at Augustana Twilight

Sioux Falls, S.D.–Up against the most talented fields they will face all year, the Statesmen men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2018 season at the Augustana Twilight Friday.
The women finished 23rd out of 25 teams with 649 points, while the men were 23rd out of 23 programs with 705 points. South Dakota claimed the women’s crown (24 points) and Nebraska was the men’s team champion (34 points).
The meet was headlined by three NCAA Division I programs, over a handful of Division II’s, and a plethora of strong NAIA squads.
Andrea Jaquez (Fr., San Antonio, Texas, Exercise Science) topped the navy and gold women by running the 5K race in a time of 20:32.24 to place 117th. Talaysia Douver (Fr., Lakewood, Calif.) also got in the top 200 (167th) at 21:31.66, while Madison Udy (Fr., American Falls, Idaho, Exercise Science) was next in 210th place at 22:27.55.
Zena Cohuo (Fr., Carrollton, Texas, Exercise Science), in a time of 23:33.67, was 239th, while Bree’Anna Lee (Jr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) rounded out the scoring in 243rd in a time of 23:46.91.
Megan Billington of South Dakota won the female race in 17:12.50.
David Perry (Fr., Sierra Vista, Ariz.) slipped under the 26-minute mark (25:45.05) to get inside the top 200 (181st) of the men’s 7K competition, while Jack Miller (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) narrowly missed joining him as he was 204th at 26:45.99.
Cameron Shade (So., Riverdale, Ga., Sociology) (30:10), took third on his team, finishing 234th in 27:51.83. James Barrett (Fr., St. Louis, Mo., Mechanical Engineering), who was 246th in 28:56.46, and David Williams (So., Victor, Iowa, Secondary Education), who was 248th in 29:02.08, rounded out the team scoring.
Gabriel Webster (Fr., Worland, Wyo.) (250th, 29:14.10), Julian Davis (So., Palmer, Alaska, Mechanical Engineering) (251st, 29:16.16), Percy Burton (So., Baltimore, Md., Sports Management) (260th, 32:35.63), and Tylor Durbin (Fr., Fremont, Iowa, Business Management) (261st, 32:35.92) also competed for WPU on Friday.
Mason Phillips of Sioux Falls was the top male runner in a time of 21:14.12.
“This was an incredible meet with a stellar field and we dove head-first into it with a young team,” Head Coach Sean Gosewisch said. “It made for a hard learning experience, but I saw a lot of good things and much to be hopeful about.”
Next Up: William Penn travels to Des Moines on September 14 to compete in the Grand View Invitational.
