WPU 8, Olivet Nazarene 3

Trailing the Tigers 2-0 late in the game, the navy and gold finally flipped the script with two big frames.

A Geguzis sacrifice fly brought in Zoey Jones (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Elementary Education) and the navy and gold tacked on another run, but PU took the lead back in the third.

In the fourth, Bailee Rinn (So., Omaha, Neb., Biology) stole home and Naranjo singled in Crystal Warren and Rebecca Warren (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev., Nursing), giving the Statesmen the lead for good.

Headlined by a five-run fourth inning, the Statesmen cruised past Park. WPU posted a 13-4 advantage in hits, while the Buccaneers committed two fielding mistakes.

WPU 8, Olivet Nazarene 0

A game after being shut out, WPU did the same again against the Tigers, including outhitting them 10-2.

Smith, who was 4-for-4, opened the scoring with a leadoff solo home run. Huff and Martinez both recorded a run-scoring double, while the navy and gold added two more runs in the four-run third inning.

Tori Smith and Laila Smith both singled in teammates in the sixth as WPU wrapped up the game and the week.

Martinez also managed a hit and a base on balls, while Tori Smith had five strikeouts (two walks) in a two-hit shutout.

“We learned a lot about ourselves this past week,” Head Coach Laura North said. “I am a little disappointed in the 4-6 record, as we know we should have come out with a couple more wins. We need to be more consistent and control what we can control.”

“There were some really good things, though,” North added. “Some of the ladies stepped in and played positions they had not played before and made us better. Overall, it was a great week for our program leading into conference next weekend.”

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa next Wednesday for its home opener, hosting Waldorf in non-conference action at 2 p.m.
